BAY SPRINGS, Miss. – TEC announces that essay submissions are now being accepted for the annual D. L. Fail Memorial Scholarship. Two scholarships, totaling $5,000 in tuition monies, will be awarded in conjunction with MACS, the Mississippi Affordable College Savings Program to two high school students in the telephone company’s service area.
The winning submission will receive $3,000, and the 2nd place submission will receive $2,000. Both scholarships can be used to pay tuition and related expenses at any college or university of the student’s choice. Essays from eligible students will be judged by a panel of scholarship committee members. The essay topic is “First Impressions.”
Every high school student 18 years of age or younger, who is a TEC customer in the Bay Springs service area interested in continuing his or her education, is eligible for the scholarship. The Bay Springs service area customers are defined as those persons who have an active account and can be serviced by TEC. This includes customers who have any or all of the following services provided by TEC: High Speed Internet, TEC Security, phone, cable and long distance. The scholarship monies may be used for tuition at any four-year or two-year college or university of the student's choice, whether it is an in-state, out-of-state, public, or private institution.
“The scholarship’s purpose is to encourage young citizens to pursue higher education, establish life goals, and use their success to serve their community. We also hope to make young adults more aware of the positive attributes of their communities and the benefits of returning to their hometowns after college. We are grateful for our customers and are honored to have the opportunity to give back to the communities we serve. Sponsoring the D. L. Fail Scholarship is just one way we say thank you,” said Teresa Odom, accounting manager at TEC.
Applicants must be 18 years of age or younger at the time the scholarship is awarded. The postmark deadline to submit essays is Monday, November 10, 2014. Winners will be contacted by December 12. Students may pick up information at their high school counselor’s office or call TEC for more information at 601-764-2121 or 800-898-2782.
